Radio Latina

In November 2019, Indra Arriaga, Paula Cerda and Lorena Medina launched “De Son a Song” on KONR-LP Anchorage, 106.1FM- Out North Radio. The program is focused on playing two hours of Latin music of all genres and origins that helps the latin/x/e community in diaspora connect and enjoy the music that comes from our diverse cultures.

In 2023, Erika Espinosa, Nathy Valdes, Rosa Quintana, and Itzel Zagal joined the team, the program expanded to three hours, with the last hour titled, “Hora Colibri” (the Hummingbird hour) that is dedicated to community conversations that inform and connect the community. Hummingbirds are an important part of our collective Latin cultures as they symbolize the journeys that we take and the communications and messages from our ancestors and gods.

Together, De son a Song and Hora Colibri comprise Radio Latina. We invite you to listen and participate, and join us on our journey as Radio Latina grows from a radio and streaming program to an organization with a wider breadth of programs and goals.

Nathy Valdes

Nathy Valdes was born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. She has been a radio host and news announcer since 2000. Nathy is passionate about her vocation in media, and after a 13 years away from the airwaves, she returns as the star host of Radio Latina, on KONR-LP 106.1 FM Anchorage, Out North Radio.   According to Nathy, “Radio Latina is a project in collaboration with some magical women, comprising many qualities and virtues. Together we form a pentagon where there is passion for music, life, art, culture, mysticism, creation, and learning from the roots of our cultures from across Latin America. If I describe it passionately, it is because our collaboration happened in an unexpected, magical, and unusual way– a unique connection that helps our Latino-Hispanic community in Alaska…And there’s a lot more to come. And fyi, yes, I’m dedicated, passionate and crazy about what I like to do.”

Rosa Quintana

Rosa Quintana was born in Managua, Nicaragua. Her family relocated to the United States of America in 1979, where she was raised in Miami, Florida. Rosa was raised mostly in a Cuban community with some influences of her Nicaraguan heritage and other Hispanic and Latin cultures that surrounded her. She loved the diversity as she grew up because it gave her a different perspective of other people’s food, music, stories and families.

In 1995, Rosa decided to move to Alaska in search of better opportunities. Since then Rosa has lived in the Alaskan cities of Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, and Kenai.  She has met a ton of different people in all these different cities. Just recently and with good faith she has been paired with four magnificent Latina women who form the Radio Latina team. The Radio Latina project coincides with Rosa’s love of music.

Rosa believes in helping others by working hard and being a resource to them. Rosa’s favorite saying is ‘“Smile, life is too short!”, this is the reason that you will remember her radiant smile and warm personality.

Rosa thanks you for being a part of our Radio Latina world.

Itzel Zagal

Itzel Zagal, a native of Tepetlixpa in Mexico,  moved to Alaska in 2013 with her family. Itzel has an unwavering commitment to preserving the Indigenous roots of the Latinx (Abya Yala) community to promote human rights and dignity through the power of culture, education, and arts.
Itzel is pursuing a Ph.D. in Indigenous studies at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) while continuing her passion for Aztec dance and poetry writing.
Itzel is part of the amazing team at Radio Latina, a space where the Latinx community can come together to share stories, celebrate contributions, and create a sense of belonging in Alaska.
